**Female Support Workers required to work within the Colchester area, enabling older people, adults with a learning disability or physical & Sensory impairments to live as independently as possible within their own homes.

Must be flexible as hours of work  to assist first thing in the morning, mealtimes and bedtime support & Sleep ins.  To assist with light domestic duties, meal preparation, shopping and to help with personal care.

Fully paid Induction training is provided.  Level 2 in Health and Social Care preferred although this is not essential as you will have the opportunity to gain the equivalent qualification.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. I will work directly with the service user following the guidance in the support plan. I will actively look for improvements and if I see solutions that benefit the service user I will add to the support plan and share with my immediate team members and coordinator.
  2. I will use the service users agreed method of communication.
  3. I will read the risk assessment and follow the management plan so that the risk of harm is decreased.  I will highlight any changes or additions to my coordinator in a timely manner.
  4. I will input and update care and support plans and risk assessments as needs change or new opportunities occur.
  5. I will support individuals to use appropriate communication strategies, or to manage the complexities of their specific condition or behavior.
  6. I will support the service user with all aspects of personal care, to maintain good hygiene and appearance, whilst ensuring that I honour the service users’ choice and that their dignity is maintained.
  7. I will support the service users to improve their health by encouraging a good diet and exercise.
  8. I will support the service user to develop and maintain domestic skills in their own home and where they are unable I will undertake domestic tasks to support them to maintain a good standard of hygiene in their home.
  9. I will assist the service user with household budgeting and benefits. I will keep accurate financial records for auditing purposes.
  10. I will support the service user to write shopping lists and support them to go shopping.
  11. I will support the service user to choose healthy options and support them to cook their meals whilst observing the risk assessment.
  12. I will actively work in partnership with families, carers and other professionals with the best interests of the service users as my priority. 
  13. I will seek out new opportunities, activities and experiences within the local community with the service user.
  14. I will promote independence at all times for the service user.
  15. I will ensure service users’  information  is kept confidential and secure and I will never discuss service users information inappropriately
  16. I will attend reviews on behalf of the service user ensuring I have the correct information in order to gain the best outcome for the service user. I will support the service user with the review process.
  17. I will encourage the individual to develop self-confidence, to encourage choice, self-determination and promote independence at all times.
  18. I will ensure that information is accessible and in a format relevant to the individual.
  19. I will support and be fully involved in the process of preventing and controlling infection.
  20. I will be aware of my own, others and the service user’s health and safety and report any occurrences or potential hazards to the coordinator.
  21. I will take an active part and bring positive feedback to team meetings.
  22. I will commit to a continual learning process in order to increase my skills so that I am constantly improving the level of service I offer.
  23. I will be aware of duties not to be undertaken and promote and abide by Primary Care policy and procedures.
  24. I will work within a non-discriminatory framework.
  25. I will take part in internal audits and quality assurance.
  26. I will provide cover for my team in times of sickness and annual leave.
  27. I will behave in a manner that ensures security of property and resources.
  28. I will avoid any behaviour that discriminates against individuals, colleagues or potential colleagues on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, religion, nationality, age, ethnic origin or disability.

Qualification / Education

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Good numeracy skills
  • A Diploma in Health and Social Care or to be willing to undertake this qualification
  • Willingness to undertake job specific training and hold a desire to develop


Skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Working in partnership with professionals, outside agencies, service users and their families for the benefit of the service user
  • Ability to allocate tasks and prioritise workload
  • Ability to effectively communicate with service users using their preferred method
  • Ability to complete risk assessments, support plans and management plans
  • Ability to supervise staff and to identify support and development needs
  • Knowledge relating to Health & Safety in the workplace including Manual Handling Risk Assessment
  • A good understanding of Equal Opportunities and Anti Discriminatory /Oppressive practices

  • For specific posts you will need a full driving licence and use of a car with business class insurance.
