*BEING A DRIVER IS ESSENTIAL*

· WEEKENDS: There is some weekend work. Shifts are normally 4-6 hours. We can explain more about weekend work at interview.

· SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: Applicants must be able to work in the school holidays. Hours can be more flexible in the holidays as the child is off school. Applicants are not asked to work over night. Hours you would not be asked to work are 9:00pm – 6:30am.

· MORNINGS: There is the possibility to work a morning shift within this role (or can be a separate job for someone interested in morning shifts)  Help in the morning involves preparing the disabled child for school. Hours start at 06:30am until 08:15/09:00am. (Finishing hours are flexible but you do need to be here at 6:30am)

 

The family would like a positive, confident, patient person to either work alone or with the family. The family would also require the applicant to be confident to play/include or look after the special needs child’s younger sibling who is 6. The family need someone with good interpersonal skills and a good sense of humour to work with the family. The families’ house, garden and vehicle are fully adapted to the needs of a young disabled person and carers/support worker’s needs.

Applicant Criteria:

•  COMPETENT DRIVERS who have a full clean driver’s license. (Please note we cannot accept anyone who is not a driver.)

•  Ideally we would like people available to stay for at least 1 year with preference to work longer term

•  Willing and confident in driving the disability car – (or willingness to learn and build confidence)

•  Excellent communication skills and a willingness to learn how to communicate with a non-verbal child. The child has physical disabilities that prevent speech but is cognitively bright and is a very good communicator, for example using eye gaze technology with her own

I TOBI computer.

•  Suitable level of physical fitness to manage the physical needs of working with a young person with physical disabilities for example pushing a wheelchair.

•  Appropriate applicants must be reliable and turn up to work on time.

•  Able to support personal care, social, physical, learning and emotional needs of the young person.

•  Able to work collaboratively and alongside the whole family (Mum, dad, brother, grandma).

•  The family seek applicants with a great attitude, self-motivation and great communication skills.

• Experience of special needs and physical disabilities is preferable in applicants but not necessary.

Training:

Training will be needed and provided for most people but this depends on current skill level. As long as applicants have transferable skills and good references the family are open to people who want to gain experience in this area and are able to demonstrate maturity.

If you do not have a current up to date DBS check you will need to apply for one as you are working with children.
